What is the difference between a Chiropodists and Podiatrist I hear you say?!
The easiest way to remember the difference is that Chiropody is anything to do with the skin or nails and podiatry is pain or discomfort coming from inside the foot. E.g. Muscle and joint pain.
When someone wanted to become a Chiropodist they would train for a year or 2 and specialise in treatments involving nail care, calluses corns and verrucas.
In more recent years, the previous Chiropody courses ceased and the name was changed to “Podiatry”.
To become a Podiatrists, you have to study 3-4 years in University and specialise in all treatments related to Chiropody, along with lower leg muslce and joint pain and gait analysis.

Common Foot Conditions
Across all ages, foot conditions are diverse, stemming from a myriad of causes, including genetics, lifestyle, and footwear choices. From the pervasive plantar fasciitis to the deformative bunions and hammertoes, each ailment requires careful evaluation and management. A common yet potentially serious condition is the diabetic foot, necessitating vigilant monitoring to prevent complications such as ulcers and infections. Adolescents often face issues like Sever’s disease, an inflammation at the heel’s growth plate due to overuse. Arthritic conditions manifest as joint pain and can gravely hinder mobility. Timely intervention, incorporating both conservative and advanced therapeutic approaches, ensures the retention of foot function and alleviation of pain. Lastly, issues like fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot are prevalent. These conditions, while more superficial, also demand professional attention to prevent recurrence and to ensure holistic foot health. Regular podiatric check-ups aid in identifying such problems early, promoting swift treatment and preventing the detriment to your quality of life.
