What Is A Fungal Toenail ?

A fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition where a fungus infects the nails, typically affecting the toenails more often than fingernails. The infection can cause the nail to become discoloured, thickened, brittle and sometimes painful. It often begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail, but as the infection progresses, the nail may become deformed and crumble.

Fungal nail infections are caused by various types of fungi, including dermatophytes, yeasts and molds, which thrive in warm, moist environments. They can be contracted through contact with contaminated surfaces, such as communal showers, swimming pools or shared nail tools. People with weakened immune systems, diabetes or poor circulation are at a risk of developing fungal nail infections.

Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, either topical or oral, depending on the severity of the infection.

What Are the Symptoms of a Fungal Nail Problem ?

If you’ve got fungal nail problem – it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own. Or you might pass it off as something “everyone” your age suffers from…

There’s no obvious reason why it happened – but it doesn’t seem to be shifting and it’s been there a good while now.

Common symptoms include:

  • Discoloration: The nail may become yellow, white, brown, or greenish in colour, often starting at the tips or edges.
  • Thickening: The affected nail may become thicker than usual, making it harder to trim or file.
  • Brittleness: The nail may become brittle, cracked, or crumbly, leading to parts of the nail breaking or peeling away.
  • Foul Odor: In some cases, the infected nail may emit an unpleasant smell due to the buildup of fungal growth underneath.
